You can also head out to the nearby town of Asenovgrad, which is also known as the Bulgarian Jerusalem. This fortress was built in the 16th century and it was once used by Ivan-Asen II, the king of Bulgaria. This fortress is one of the best-preserved fortresses in the country and has amazing views. You can also take a day trip to the charming village of Koprivshtitsa. This small town has an interesting history and is easily accessible by public transport. If you're not in the mood for a walk, you can also visit the Buzludzha Monument, which is a futuristic looking saucer-shaped building that was once the Communist Party headquarters. Despite being in disrepair after Communism fell, it's still a great day trip from Plovdiv.

You can also visit the Bachkovo monastery, which is the second-largest in Bulgaria. You'll be able to learn more about the monastery's history and see its impressive collection of church objects. You can even stop by the museum to look at its many exhibits, which include ancient weapons and intricate national costumes.
