A guide for first-time visitors to Zermatt

Whether you're skiing, climbing or relaxing, there are a lot of things to do in Zermatt. This Alpine town in the Valais canton is known for its ski slopes and scenic mountain vistas. Located at approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, this small mountain town has a vibrant après-ski scene and a wide variety of boutique shops and restaurants.

Gornergrat

Located in the Swiss canton of Valais, Gornergrat is one of the most spectacular mountain vistas in the country. It is located at a whopping 3089 meters above sea level. It is also the highest open air rack railway in the world. The Gornergrat train climbs a whopping 1,500 meters in altitude, taking 33 minutes to reach the top.

The train also has a spectacular view of the Matterhorn. The railway has a gradient of one in five at its maximum. This makes it a great choice for a day trip.

The Gornergrat is also a great spot for winter skiing. It is home to ski slope 69, which runs close to the Matterhorn. The weather can be erratic at times, but it is generally mild in the high valleys near Zermatt.

Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge

Located in the Swiss Alps, the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is a beautiful part of the mountain scenery. It is part of the Europe Trail and connects Grachen and Zermatt. Originally built to protect the area from falling rock, it is now one of the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridges. Its length is 494 metres, spanning 85 meters above the valley.

Besides the incredible bridge, the hike also offers panoramic views of the Matter Valley and Weisshorn. It is an easy hike but can be a little challenging. The route is circular and is suitable for all ages.

The starting point for the hike is in the village of Randa. It is possible to reach it by car or by train. It is about three hours from Basel and two hours from Geneva.

Zermatt

Sunnegga Funicular

Located in Zermatt, the Sunnegga Funicular carries visitors from the town to the village of Sunnegga. This mountain station is a popular destination for tourists and skiers alike. You can find numerous attractions at Sunnegga, including a beginner park, a restaurant and the first cable car in Switzerland to take you to the top of Sunnegga Peak.

The Sunnegga funicular is operated by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG. This company has carried more than fourteen million passengers on the funicular since its construction in 1983.

A ride on the funicular takes four and a half minutes and offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn. It also carries kickbike riders, winter walkers, and mountain bikers.

The Sunnegga-Rothorn valley station is located within the mountains and is about ten minutes' walk from the Zermatt train station. The station has a chairlift and a walkers' lift. It also offers a variety of restaurants along the way and rents helmets.

Matterhorn Ski Safari

Located at the foot of the Matterhorn, Zermatt is one of Switzerland's most popular ski resorts. The town is known for its huge amount of off-piste terrain and has a large selection of luxury restaurants. Despite being more akin to Austria than other Swiss ski destinations, the town has more of a European feel.

Although Zermatt is not known for its beginner areas, there are a few groomed black runs that are suitable for first time skiers. However, the altitude can make it difficult to get good skiing in the summer. The best way to avoid altitude sickness is to descend to a lower altitude. The village is also not very centrally located, so the best way to get around is to use an electric taxi.

Do I have to give my guide a tip?
No. It is not required and not expected of you to tip your guide. However, if one is presented, the guide might accept a gratuity. To guarantee that they are fairly compensated for their time, each guide sets the price of their tours. They do not depend on gratuities from tours as a result. If you want to support your guide, write a review of your tour.
+
What happens once I make a reservation?
After making the payment, you should wait at least 24 hours prior to the travel date for your Local Expert to confirm the requested date. If your reservation is approved, a confirmation email will be sent to your registered email address with the reservation's specifics and the Local Expert's direct contact information.
+
Is it possible to py in cash?
We have a policy that states that a reservation can only be verified after a legitimate payment has been made on our website. The process aids in preventing disputes that could occur while paying in cash in person. You can be confident that this money won't be given to the Local Expert right away. After your tour is over, Excursopedia will hold it and then provide it to the Local Guide.
