A guide on the best things to do in Inverness
Inverness is the capital of the Scottish Highlands and has a lot to offer. So much so, that if you don't want to leave town after your first day, no one would blame you! In this article, I'm going to tell you what my favorite things are in Inverness so that when you visit this beautiful city, you know exactly where to go first.
Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle
Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle are two of the most iconic things to do in Inverness. Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, located in the southwest of Inverness-shire. It is well known for its alleged sightings of the cryptozoological creature known as "Nessie" (or "Nessie"). This has led to it becoming one of Scotland's major tourist attractions with visitors coming from all over the world to see this part of history up close and personal!
Urquhart Castle sits on a rocky promontory overlooking Loch Ness and dates back over 1,000 years ago when it was built by Clan MacDougall who were one time lords over much of this area during those times before being defeated by Sir Colin Campbell (aka Black Knight) during 1449 AD whilst trying to claim lands further south towards Perthshire which ended up being awarded instead by King James II himself(hence why we call him King James II today).
Clava Cairns
Clava Cairns is a prehistoric monument in the Highlands of Scotland. It is a stone-built burial chamber, dating from the 3rd millennium BC. The cairn was built over an earlier tomb which had been destroyed by fire; this earlier site was excavated in 1876 by William Gowans who discovered fragments of human bones and pottery inside it.
In 1961 another excavation took place at Clava Cairns and archaeologists found more evidence of earlier activity at this site including animal bones and charcoal samples that were carbon dated to between 2400 BC - 2000 BC (Bronze Age).
Fort George
Fort George is a large military fortification located in Inverness, Scotland. It's the largest British Army base in Scotland, and it was built in 1748. The fort has been used as a prison for high-profile prisoners, including Bonnie Prince Charlie (who was imprisoned there after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden), Rob Roy MacGregor (who escaped from Fort William) and Michael Dwyer (who escaped twice).
Inverness Castle
The castle is one of Inverness' most popular attractions, and it's easy to see why. The site has been occupied for more than 2,000 years and has played host to kings and queens like Mary Queen of Scots. Today, visitors can explore its many rooms, including those that once served as a courtroom or prison cell.
The castle grounds also include an excellent museum with exhibits on local history; art gallery; gift shop; cafe/restaurant serving traditional Scottish fare such as haggis burgers (made with minced sheep organs) or salmon fishcakes with dill sauce.
Inverness Museum & Art Gallery
If you're looking for the best things to do in Inverness, then look no further than Inverness Museum & Art Gallery. It's located right in the heart of town and houses a wide range of exhibits, including geological and natural history collections as well as paintings by Scottish artists such as Sir David Wilkie (1785-1841) and James Eckford Lauder (1838-1927).
Inverness Museum & Art Gallery also has an extensive photographic collection featuring images from both past eras as well as modern times.
River Ness & Ness Islands
The River Ness is a great place for a picnic. You can find tables and benches scattered along its banks, so there's no need to worry about bringing your own furniture! The Ness Islands are also ideal for walks, with their beautiful scenery and wildlife. If you're feeling hungry afterwards (or if you want to save money), why not stop off at the Nessie Cafe or Gift Shop?
Inverness Cathedral
Inverness Cathedral is a great place to visit. It has a beautiful building, a view of the city, and an excellent garden. The cathedral also has a gift shop filled with lovely things that you can buy as souvenirs or gifts for those back home. The cafe inside serves delicious food and drink options at reasonable prices so there's no reason not to stop by when you're hungry!
Inverness Botanic Gardens
As you walk through the botanic gardens, you will be able to see many different types of plants and trees. The Inverness Botanic Gardens are open to the public and free to enter all year round.
