Located in the north-western Costa Rica, the Arenal Volcano is an active stratovolcano. It is approximately 1,633 metres tall and has a crater 140 metres in diameter. The crater has been formed by eruptions that started around 7,000 years ago. There is also seismic activity and gases that escape from springs that surround the mountain.

Eruptions began around 7,000 years ago

Located in Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano has a history of eruptions. Over the last four thousand years, there have been ten large explosive eruptions.

The volcano was initially formed as a perfect conical peak. The first eruption occurred about 7,000 years ago. After a period of dormancy, it erupted again. The eruption was accompanied by a hot gas cloud that caused deaths in the nearby Tabacon river valley. In the summer of 1968, the temperatures in the surrounding hot springs rose.

The explosion ejected large lava rocks at high speeds. They landed up to five kilometers away. They left a 25-meter diameter impact crater. These balls of lava also broke through sedimentary rocks. The resulting tephra buried three villages. Almost 100 people died.

Arenal Volcano is one of a group of volcanoes that are part of a chain of volcanic activity. It has a history of major explosive eruptions and lava flows. The most recent period of activity began with a massive explosion in 1968. The lava flow erupted over two days. This was followed by pyroclastic flows from vents at the top of the volcano.

Lake Arenal is Costa Rica's largest lake

Located near the Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal is a major attraction for both nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. This pristine blue lake is home to a number of different species of fish. Rainbow bass are particularly popular. Locally they are known as "guapote."

Although there is no public beach, you can relax by the lake or participate in water sports. There are a number of boat tours and half-day excursions available to help you explore the lake.

The waters of Lake Arenal are surrounded by rolling hills and verdant tropical forests. You can also hike or ride horseback through the area. The area is also perfect for birdwatching.

The main draw of the lake is its great fishing. There are several different types of fish, including Machaca and Rainbow Bass. You can try fishing in the shallow coves, but it's best to use a 6- or 8-foot rod. If you want to fly fish, you should use a 3' of 13# fluorocarbon tippet and a 6' leader.

Seismic activity and gases escaping from springs around the mountain

Despite the dramatic decline in eruptions and lava flows since 2010, Arenal Volcano is still active. The volcano remains an attractive destination for tourists, and continues to fuel the surrounding therapeutic hot springs. A few minor eruptions have occurred, however.

Seismic activity has also been recorded at Arenal. A few earthquakes have generated tsunamis, which can cause death. Another reason why there have been fatalities near the volcano is due to avalanches discharging into lakes, which can generate tsunamis.

The majority of incidents within 5 km of the volcano occurred in VEI 1-3 eruptions. The remaining incidents were considered to involve local residents. This suggests that the risk associated with the hazard increases with increasing distance.

In the past four centuries, the average number of fatalities per incident has increased. The majority of deaths at distances between 5 and 10 km were related to pyroclastic density currents. The largest incidents at distances between 5 and 15 km were lahars. The majority of incidents at distances above 10 km were tephra-related.

FAQ
+
Should I offer my guide a tip?
No. It is not required and not expected of you to tip your guide. However, if one is presented, the guide might accept a gratuity. To guarantee that they are fairly compensated for their time, each guide sets the price of their tours. They do not depend on gratuities from tours as a result. If you want to support your guide, write a review of your tour.
+
What happens once I make a reservation?
After making the payment, you should wait at least 24 hours prior to the travel date for your Local Expert to confirm the requested date. If your reservation is approved, a confirmation email will be sent to your registered email address with the reservation's specifics and the Local Expert's direct contact information.
+
Is it possible to py in cash?
We have a policy that states that a reservation can only be verified after a legitimate payment has been made on our website. The process aids in preventing disputes that could occur while paying in cash in person. You can be confident that this money won't be given to the Local Expert right away. After your tour is over, Excursopedia will hold it and then provide it to the Local Guide.
+
How can I find out if a reservation has been confirmed?
When you finish making your online payment and the Local Guide accepts your booking request, your reservation will be finalized. You will receive a confirmation email. Don't worry; if the Local Guide does not confirm your booking after you provide your credit card information, the transaction will not be completed.
