A guide for first-time visitors to Bamberg

Whether you are traveling to Bamberg for the first time or you are an experienced traveler, you can find plenty of excursions and day trips to take in the city. Some of these include the Old Town Hall, the Christmas Market and the Schlenkerla Tavern.

Old Town Hall

During Old Town Hall excursions and day trips in Bamberg, you'll find some of the city's most famous landmarks. These include the Bamberg Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) and the Brewery Museum.

Both of these are on the west side of the town. The Bamberg Altes Rathaus is a half-timbered house that straddles the river. The Brewery Museum is a hilltop brewery converted to a museum. The museum features over 1300 artifacts related to the history of beer in Bamberg.

The Jesuit Church of Bamberg is the only Baroque church in the city. The interior has gorgeous stucco ceilings and original tapestries. There are also statues, crosses, and Medieval vestments. The Diozesanmuseum is next to the cathedral and houses the treasury of the church. There are also exhibits on the lives of the medieval bishops and Pope Clemens II.

Another popular attraction is the Schlenkerla Brewery. The first taps are held on the first Thursday of October. This is a truly local event. You can tour the brewery yourself or opt for a guided tour.

Christmas Market

Located in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, Bamberg is a compact city, perfect for exploring on foot. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is filled with picturesque streets, illuminated shops, and nativity scenes.

The town also has a few Christmas Markets, including the Bamberg Christkindlmarkt, which is the largest in the town. The market is open from 9:30am to 8pm on weekdays and 11am to 6pm on weekends. There are also two smaller Christmas Markets in the town, the Guteneck Palace and the Marien Church, which are also worth a look.

The best part about the Bamberg Christmas Market is that it doesn't get overcrowded, unlike some other popular Christmas Markets. The town is not only small enough to explore on foot, but also well located for easy access to other nearby attractions, including the Altenburg Castle, Bamberg Cathedral, and St Michael's Monastery.

For the best of both worlds, consider staying at Le Baldinger Hotel, which is only a five minute walk from Maximiliansplatz. The hotel is a good value, especially if you're planning on spending the night in the town.

Bamberg

Schlenkerla Tavern

Located on Dominikanerstrasse in Bamberg, the Schlenkerla brewery tavern is the only place in the city where you can try smoked beer directly from wooden barrels. It's also a good spot to get some information about this unique style of beer.

Originally part of the Dominican monastery, the brewery is situated in the former house chapel. The brewery produces six styles of smoke beer, one of which is the famous "rauchbier." The name comes from the Franconian expression, "schlenkern," meaning "not to walk straight."

You can learn more about the tavern and the brewery on the brewery's website. The brewery's smoked beers are served by gravity from wooden casks. You can also purchase a bottle of this beer.

If you're planning a trip to Bamberg, Germany, you might want to plan a tour to see some of the city's attractions. It's a beautiful town with a long history that is largely untouched from World War II. It was nicknamed the Little Venice of the North.

Bamberg

Lisberg Castle

Located about twelve kilometers west of Bamberg, Lisberg Castle is one of the oldest castles in the German state of Bavaria. This medieval structure was first mentioned in a historical document in the year 820. Today it is a privately owned castle in the Steigerwald district of the Bavarian town of Bamberg.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also known for its picturesque architecture. The seven hills surrounding the city are crowned with charming old churches.

The Old Town is located on the western side of a wide basin in the valley of the Regnitz River. The city's historic downtown area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are numerous walking paths around the town.

The Bamberg Cathedral is a landmark in the town. This neoclassical structure is one of the best-preserved buildings in Bamberg. It contains the tomb of Emperor Henry II and Pope Clement II. The building's screen features twelve apostles and Mary and Elizabeth.

FAQ

Do I have to give my guide a tip?
No. It is not required and not expected of you to tip your guide. However, if one is presented, the guide might accept a gratuity. To guarantee that they are fairly compensated for their time, each guide sets the price of their tours. They do not depend on gratuities from tours as a result. If you want to support your guide, write a review of your tour.
+
What happens once I make a reservation?
After making the payment, you should wait at least 24 hours prior to the travel date for your Local Expert to confirm the requested date. If your reservation is approved, a confirmation email will be sent to your registered email address with the reservation's specifics and the Local Expert's direct contact information.
+
Is it possible to py in cash?
We have a policy that states that a reservation can only be verified after a legitimate payment has been made on our website. The process aids in preventing disputes that could occur while paying in cash in person. You can be confident that this money won't be given to the Local Expert right away. After your tour is over, Excursopedia will hold it and then provide it to the Local Guide.

How can I find out if a reservation has been confirmed?
When you finish making your online payment and the Local Guide accepts your booking request, your reservation will be finalized. You will receive a confirmation email. Don't worry; if the Local Guide does not confirm your booking after you provide your credit card information, the transaction will not be completed.
