Located on an artificial island in Dubai, the Burj Al Arab has been the centerpiece of the city for years. It has 202 suites, a seawater aquarium, a helicopter service, and a huge atrium that is 180 m (590 ft) high.
Built on an artificial island
Throughout time, people have constructed artificial islands in the sea. These structures have been used for coastal defense, offshore fishing, and nuclear power plants. In recent years, they have been used as solid waste depositories.
In the 1960s, the city of Osaka proposed building an airport on an artificial island off the coast of the city. The proposal was rejected. However, the city did plan to build a new airport on the bay. The planners wanted to have the airport built away from the city's built-up area, and away from 24-hour operations.
In 1994, Japan's Kansai International Airport was constructed on an artificial island in the Osaka Bay. The airport was designed to be able to withstand flooding and typhoons. The terminal building was designed by Italian master architect Renzo Piano. The Kansai airport has an area of 5.11 million square meters.
Atrium is 180 m (590 ft) high
Located in the heart of Dubai on a man-made island, the Burj Al Arab is one of the world's most luxurious hotels. Designed by renowned multidisciplinary consultancy Atkins, the building's design reflects the traditional Arabian architectural form of a sail.
The atrium, the main feature of the building, rises from the lobby level to the top of the building. It is 180 metres (590 ft) high, making it the tallest hotel atrium in the world.
The building's facade is inspired by the sail of a dhow, an Arabian vessel. It features a translucent white fabric that is illuminated from within. The facade also features a large waterfall that creates a kaleidoscope effect. A complex lighting arrangement ensures that the facade changes color from day to night.
It has a seawater aquarium
Located in the Persian Gulf, Burj Al Arab is a world's first five-star hotel that has a seawater aquarium. The hotel's interiors feature Arabian influences with colors and patterns that recall the region's traditional design.
The main atrium of the hotel has a fountain and a large aquarium. The waterfall in the atrium is an elegant design with well-choreographed movement. It shoots up 42 meters into the air. It also uses fibre optics with water to create a kaleidoscope effect.
The aquarium in the lobby of the Burj Al Arab is operated by the Jumeirah Group. This facility features ground-breaking conservation and research initiatives. It is also an intensive care unit for injured and sick turtles. It is a partnership with the Dubai Wildlife Protection Office and the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory.

During the construction of Burj Al Arab, up to 2,000 workers worked on it. The foundation was made from 230 concrete pillars that were driven into the sand. These pillars formed a honeycomb pattern to protect the foundation from erosion.
The building's interior is covered in 24-karat gold leaf. The hotel's ceilings are adorned with 29,000 Swarovski crystals in the Milky Way shape. There are also three aquariums at the hotel with a total of 50 different species of fish.
